Canon G7X Mark 2 - One Month Review - Mini 80D
I never really enjoyed shooting with compact cameras.
The IQ was dicey, focus speed clumsy, wake up time and overall response time always caused aggravation and simply took the joy out of taking pictures. The DSLR was always much more responsive.
A compact camera (like any photography equipment) is always a combination of tough compromises. You somehow have to fit good IQ, small size, generous zoom range, light weight - and of course not break the bank - all into something small and appealing.
All the "premium compacts" I have used / owned in the past never lived up to an overall enjoyable combination of all the above.
Along comes the G7X mark 2
This trick of the 1 inch sensor - allows great IQ, generous zoom 24-100 , super bright lens 1.8 - 2.8 , overall compact size and light weight. AND the camera is super responsive ! turns on right away, provides super fast access to features via the quick menu, zooming in and out is quick, and you have access to many advanced features I have on my Canon 80D !!
The G7X mark 2 lens has excellent IS - allowing hand held night shots at very low ISO - combine this with the super bright lens - and it functions exceptional as a night photography camera !
True the G7X mark 2 has some sacrifices built in. No EVF, its not an APS-C sensor, battery life is much shorter then a DSLR. However for me its very much like a mini 80D.
As far as IQ. The real way to evaluate IQ to my mind - is only by PRINTING your pictures and viewing the result. When I compare the prints from my 80D to the G7X - especially my street photography shots, there is little or no difference.
Yes, the G7X cannot take carefully posed portraits of the same quality of the 80D + 50mm 1.4 - but those are a fragment of what I do.
G7X mark 2 = A WINNER

Canon G7X Mark 2 Mini Review
Pros:
- Small and compact
- Overall excellent Image quality - rivals DSLR quality
- Lens 24-100 1.8 - 2.8 = Amazing !!
- Quick start up
- Surprisingly good battery life
- Auto WB gives great colors
- Easy quick menu for manual adjustments
- Very responsive
- Allows many advanced features of higher canon bodies, picture styles, kelvin WB control.
Cons:
- Expensive
- No VF
- Missing some advanced features for configuring auto WB range, TV range etc.
- Can't think of much else
Who is this camera for ?
Probably aimed at the advanced user who has DSLR / or advanced mirror-less experience. For the Soccer mom - I would go with the SX740.
